This plant is called swertia chirayita in Latin; Kirat, Bhurnib, Kirattikt in Sanskrit; Kadechirait, Kirait in Marathi; There are names like Chirayata etc. in Hindi and Gujarati. (Kadechirait Hin. Chirayat, Chireta; C. Nelbevu; Gu. Kariyatu; Sam. Chiratitka, Bhunimb; In. Chireta; La. Swarshia chirata; Gentianaceae (Gentienaceae).
It has two varieties. One is Kadekirait and the other is Palekirait. Kiraita trees are short and one and a half cubits tall and the leaves are short and long. Palekirait was from gardens in India. Kadechirait comes from Nepal to Mumbai via Calcutta. It has a very bitter taste.
This Varshayu (one year living) medicinal plant is 1.5 m. 1,200-3,000 m high in the temperate Himalayas. At altitude, it is found from Kashmir to Assam.
Leaves opposite, simple, sessile, the lower ones larger and sometimes stalked; Perianth large, branched and leafy; Flowers small, pale green with a purple tinge; A pair of greenish glands (glands) at the base of each petal and long white or reddish hairs on them. Sepals 4-6, attached to base of petals; Kinjput has a single cup [à flower, ] boll small, 0.6 mm., oblong and pointed, splitting into two lobes. Seeds are numerous and minute.

It is given for diarrhoea, weakness, fever etc. Kirai is useful in chronic typhoid fever and loose stomach. Many of the tribes of Kiraita are found in mountainous areas; They are used as kiraitas. Every year in India 400 quintals of Kiraita are used. These plants are used in juice digesters
