Ayurveda (/ˌɑːjʊərˈveɪdə, –ˈviː-/; IAST: āyurveda^[1]) is an alternative medicine system with historical roots in the Indian subcontinent.^[2] It is heavily practiced throughout India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, where as much as 80% of the population report using ayurveda.^[3][4][5] The theory and practice of ayurveda is pseudoscientific; some ayurvedic medicines have been found to contain toxic substances.^[6][7][8][9]
